About Us

Located among Baltimore City’s historic southwest neighborhoods, at the original site of the historic Mt. Clare Shops, the B&O Railroad Museum is recognized universally as the birthplace of American railroading. It was here within the Museum’s 40-acre campus that Baltimore businessmen, surveyors, and engineers set about building the B&O Railroad in 1829 – laying the first commercial long-distance track, building the first passenger station, and inventing America’s unique railroad. A National Historic Landmark, Affiliate of the Smithsonian Museum, and independent educational resource, the B&O Railroad Museum collects, preserves and interprets artifacts related to early American railroading.

Both children and adults will delight at the B&O Railroad Museum’s family friendly exhibits and activities. Throughout the Museum campus, visitors will enjoy hands-on exhibits that make learning fun! From viewing exciting railroad flicks in our theatre car to climbing into the cab of a steam locomotive, there is plenty to SEE and DO here! Our seasonal family activity area is full of fun for the entire family. Climb aboard our wooden train play set, participate in a pump car demonstration or watch toy trains make their way through our G-scale garden layout.

Visitors to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum can ride the rails of history along the first commercial railroad track in America! The Museum offers train rides Wednesday-Sunday, April through December, and weekends in January for a nominal fee with paid admission.*

*Train rides are not guaranteed with your visit. The Museum reserves the right to cancel train rides due to safety, weather, equipment issues, and/or other circumstances.
