About us:
USS Constellation, the last all sail ship built by the US Navy,
is open as a museum in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The USS
Constellation Museum invites visitors to discover Life on
Board, the only Civil War era vessel afloat that represents the
Union Navy, as a symbol of sailing technology just before the
rise of steam power. Constellation served as a flagship of the
African Squadron just before the Civil War, and her crew rescued
over seven hundred souls from slavery. The ship then led a
humanitarian mission to Ireland to deliver famine relief to a nation
that suffered political oppression. The ship's service continued
as a sail training vessel at the US Naval Academy and ended with
her final role as the flagship of the Atlantic Fleet during WWII. The
mission of the USS Constellation Museum is to honor and
perpetuate the legacy of dedicated service given by the ship and
her crew through the preservation, restoration and interpretation
of this revered symbol of our maritime heritage. This unique
artifact will act as a cultural and educational resource for the
people of the city of Baltimore, the state of Maryland, the United
States and abroad.
